Undergraduate Certificate

An Undergraduate Certificate is awarded in recognition of a student’s completion of a set schedule of courses in a given emphasis area. An undergraduate certificate may be available to both degree-seeking students (those working toward a bachelor’s degree) or as a stand-alone certificate for non-degree seeking students (those not working toward a degree).

Currently enrolled CMU undergraduate students:

  • Must consult their advisor to add the program to their existing program and to verify that they are eligible for the Undergraduate Certificate they desire
  • Will be awarded the additional Undergraduate Certificate and have it added to their transcript when they complete their Undergraduate Degree

New students applying for a degree program who would like to add an undergraduate certificate:

  • Apply to the bachelor’s degree program they would like to pursue
  • Must discuss adding the undergraduate certificate with their academic advisor
  • Will be awarded the additional Undergraduate Certificate and have it added to their transcript when they complete their Undergraduate Degree

Non-degree seeking students:

  • Apply to the Undergraduate Certificate they would like to pursue
  • Do not need to submit transcripts
  • Will receive their certificate when they successfully complete the required courses
  • Are not eligible for federal financial aid

Program Requirements

Undergraduate Certificate in Social Media

This online undergraduate certificate is 15 credits and prepares students to understand the history, development, benefits, and cultural impact of social media. This certificate will help students become competent communicators who can integrate social media into a strategic communication plan to benefit modern businesses and organizations.

Required Courses  (12 hours)

  • JRN 105 Social Media in Society
  • JRN 250 Social Media: Managing the Message
  • JRN 370 Social Media Legal and Ethical Issues
  • JRN 460 Social Media Practicum, Portfolio and Plan

Electives  (3 hours)

Three semester hours that purposefully complements the social media certificate and the student's interests in consultation with the program faculty advisor.
